It’s hard to imagine improving upon the kids and ice cream concept. You say, “Want to go get ice cream?” They say, “ICE CREAM!” You take that as a yes, drive them to the local parlor and there is much rejoicing.
Looking for that elusive next level of frozen fun, however, we stumbled across Yogurt Builderz in Scottsdale. Tucked in amongst the businesses on the Northwest corner of Scottsdale & Thunderbird Rds, Yogurt Builderz offers a more interactive experience.

Given cups and directions, Brandi, the boys and I were loosed upon various flavors and toppings (including a couple of unusual selections like pomegranate and kiwi/strawberry). We were free to grab any size container we wished, and as many flavors/toppings as our imaginations would hold. The cost is based purely on weight. After perfecting our concoctions and taking them to the register, we saw our creations weighed to determine the extent of the damage that the boys’ outsized gluttonous eyes would inflict upon my wallet at a rate of 39¢ per ounce.
I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of debit devastation. Seems that piling on mini M & M’s, sprinkles, marshmellows, etc is far more economical when you aren’t getting whacked at the borderline usurious norm of 50¢ per topping. In this economy, you take the good news where you can.
-Victory!!!
-This one too, please.
-Damnit... too fast again.
The boys had a great time making, and more importantly, devouring, their treats. While the reduced fat content of the yogurt was more than offset by the sugar-infused madness we heaped upon it, we can still pretend that we have found a healthier alternative to the heavy creams that comprise the real mccoy.
That’s our story, and like dessert to our ribs, we're sticking to it.

This looks like the type of place that I would be screaming for too.
BRAIN FREEZE!!! I love ice cream, you should check out my post on Amy's here in Austin, wonderfully Austin weird and tasty too.
PS it would be so cool to just go out in PJ's but Hef is the only adult who still can...
Don't let boys have straws and mini M&M's....they may melt in your mouth and not in your hands, but they feel like artillery shells when they hit you in the eye! (Perhaps you found this out the hard way?)
JL - It's a cool joint. Only open for a couple of months now, so I hope it makes it.
Russell - I read that one. That place sounds outrageous. As for the PJ's, I only roll out like that on the weekend ;)
Amanda - I am fortunate not to have fallen victim to that particular projectile mishap yet, so thanks for the warning. Of course, with these two, disarming them in one capacity only leads to the creation of a different and more effective weapon. Convicts could learn a lesson or two from a three year old. Shaving a spoon into a shiv? Please. A toddler can MacGyver a pipe bomb from a root beer float.
Paul - You have 2 adorable children! That looks like a place that I'd enjoy. I wish we had one around here... :)
Hi Paul, ooh that headache ,ouch! . I went to my first one of these about a month ago. It does seem a bit more expensive buying it by the ounce but I was impressed with the taste and quality. Normally I never do toppings but on the first occasion ( to test out if I would return-which I did) my little mini cup of stuff was $5.50. I did it again without the fruit on top and it was still over $5. No getting it less expensive. But it is a worthwhile treat. BTW, this desert ( with or without the toppings) sticks to the waistline, not just the ribs, LOL.
Paul - What a cool place (no pun intended). And what great shots of the boys! Happy holidays.
Love the jammies! I also love the concept...I like to do it myself and get exactly what I want!
They sure look like they were having a good time and good eats! Courageous of you to let them run with it! and love the jammie theme too! They are cute Paul. Sorry about your brain freeze... Happy holidays - I'm looking forward to your next outing with the kids!
Paul - they have this concept all over Brazil. I was hoping it would surface around here! Sweet. And yummy! ~Rita
Paul - I love the idea of putting reduced fat and sugar together - well balanced!
I look like that when I get brain freeze, too. Always feels like a searing optic nerve pain. It looks like you discovered a really cool and not terribly expensive treat for the family.
Who told your kids that they could dress like me?
Debi - Thank you :) Sounds like there is a niche that needs filling in your market. Hop to it!
William - By my math, we actually came out a little ahead compared to the standard alternative. I am going to test a theory next time for shaving more expense by opting for the lighter toppings. Lots of whipped cream ;)
Tom - Happy holidays to you as well. Hope all is well in Temecula and everywhere else your travels have taken you.
Kelly - Absolutely right. If any knucklehead is going to screw up my order, best that the knucklehead is me.
Valerie - Nothing says playing hookey like eating ice cream in PJs, except maybe smoking Cuban cigars in PJs.
Rita - I bet something like it is heading your way if it is not already in the works. Colorado is cool like that.
Petra - Reduced fat and sugar go together like Diet Coke and Captain Morgan Big Macs.
Jason - You'd think we ate with our eyeballs. Not sure how the pain works its way from mouth to retina, but my right eye does not like ice cream or smoothies nearly as much as my left.
Lisa - Bayou style!
Hi Paul, I hadn't thought of that actually-I suppose I could get a cup whipped cream ( more calories than the yogurt ) next time. It will cost less dollars I would guess, factoring in the idea that the price per calorie is really cheap. Then we would also find out how much that cup really costs.
PS, What a marketing concept. It could be said that it is the least expensive per calorie price in the market place. I am sure people who wish to remain in their present condition ( overweight) will flock to place, LMAO
Looks like everybody had fun! I'll have to see if there's one in San Antonio. I like the fruit toppings you mentioned--something besides M&Ms and sprinkles. (Or in addition to them.)
Cheers,
Robin
At $0.39 / ounce you can get 3 pounds for under $20. In hard times, that should cover your littlest one for a week!
Hi Paul...Noticed no mention of how many ounces (pounds?) of sweetness you and Brandi shared. Was that an accidental act of omission?
Kate
P.S. This intrusive question is being asked by a woman that washes down her banana splits with diet soda and her fudge brownies with skim milk.
Sounds fantastic! We will have to "drag" our boys up there soon - thanks for sharing!
Paul- Your children are adorable!
Thanks, Katerina. We're gonna keep'em :)
Oh my word, your kids have the most amazing eyes! ? They must take after their papa...:-) I love how they're out in their jammies.............these days the teens think its the in thing to wear to school.....:-)
I love that your kids are in their PJs! We have many pajama days in my house! In fact, I don't think I've done a deal without part of it being in my PJs!
Liz - They are even more dazzling in real life, if I am allowed to be a proud daddy for a moment. As for the jammies, we know how to roll out in style ;)
Krista - Wearing PJ pants and a sweatshirt as I reply to your comment. There are definitely a few benefits to the home office.
It looks like a fun outing. Also good to note they don't mind kids in PJ's!! Dad looks like he should have had one with a shot of caffiene in it! Have an awesome holiday!
Your kids are adorable! PJ's give unmatched comfort around the house or in public, who cares.
